Why do old electrical devices have to be handed over to a collection point?

Electrical devices contain valuable resources and also pollutants. The collection points give the old devices to certified waste disposal companies, who first check whether it is possible to refurbish and reuse the devices. Ideally, old products can be refurbished. If reuse is not possible, the old devices will be treated accordingly. Harmful substances are removed from the devices and valuable resources are recycled. This protects the environment and increasingly scarce resources.

Note on waste avoidance

According to the provisions of Directive 2008/98/EC on waste and its implementation in the legislation of the Member States of the European Union, waste prevention measures generally have priority over waste management measures. Measures to avoid waste in the case of electrical and electronic devices include, in particular, extending their service life by repairing defective devices and selling functional used devices instead of sending them for disposal. The federal government’s waste prevention program with the participation of the states contains further information.
