Reports from Belgium suggest another injury setback for Wout Van Aert
With the World Cup in Antwerp this weekend, the hectic period of the cyclocross season begins and we are still waiting for a date for the return of the two main players: Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert. Most fans have believed that Van Aert will return after the end of Team – Visma Lease a Bik’s training camp on December 19th, but according to Het Laaste Nieuws it could be even further away.
HLN have reported that Van Aert suffered some complications from his knee injury sustained at the Vuelta a Espana, when he appeared to be back to his best and was leading the points and mountains classification. While Van Aert is reportedly back on the bike, HLN reports that he is still having difficulty running, which is often an important element in cyclocross.

The Visma team manager confirmed at the beginning of the winter that Van Aert would only join the cyclocross field after the Visma training camp, but it seems we will have to wait even longer. The date for the confirmation of six-time world champion Mathieu van der Poel has also not yet been set, and so it seems that Thibau Nys and Co. don’t have to worry about the two big ones for at least another month.

Van Aert’s last cyclocross world title dates back to 2018 and he will be desperate to take the title back from his Dutch arch-rival this winter. However, he will have to hope that his knee makes a full recovery because after suffering an injury in 2024, the last thing the Belgian would want to do is put his 2025 campaign on hold. His team has certainly felt the impact of the absence of a fit Wout Van Aert, both in the classics and the grand tours, and he will need to be back at his best next year.
