Sinner has had a fabulous season. He ended it in style by helping Italy retain the title after they beat Australia 2-0 in the final. This makes him only the second player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era to not lose a single game in a set for an entire season. The only other player to achieve this feat was former world number one Roger Federer in 2005.
The case has drawn renewed attention after the World Anti-Doping Agency decided to appeal the case. Dutch coach Haarhuis was asked about the issue during the ongoing Davis Cup and remained skeptical about the matter: “What is my feeling? In my personal opinion, Jannik is an incredibly nice guy (and) a great player,” he said. “But we (may) never know what happened.”
Sinner also spoke about the topic during the Davis Cup and admitted that despite his many successes on the pitch, the topic remains on his mind. “I always say, ‘We had three hearings, three hearings that came out positive. So hopefully the next one will be positive too. For me, the most important thing is that everyone who surrounds me and knows me as a person trusts me. That’s also the reason why I stayed at the level I did. Of course, I had some ups and downs, and anyone who knows me (knows) that I was a little down emotionally and a little heartbroken. But sometimes life gives you difficulties and you just have to endure them.”
