The information was made official Tuesday evening. Vassilis Spanoulis has signed a two-season contract plus an optional third with AS Monaco. The 42-year-old technician succeeds Serbian Sasa Obradovic, sacked after the defeat against Le Mans on November 17. He will arrive in Monaco on Wednesday, where he should be accompanied by his deputy Ilias Kantzouris, to begin his mission.
Current coach of Greece, he will retain this position and have the double role until the end of the season. Nicknamed ‘Kill Bill’ for his decisive baskets, Spanoulis, former guard/point guard, won three Euroleagues as a player (one with Panathinaikos, two with Olympiakos, each time winning the distinction of MVP of the Final Four) and with the national team a title of European champion in 2005 and a place of vice-world champion in 2006.
The Olympiakos legend later became a coach. Between 2022 and 2024, he coached Peristeri Athens, with whom he reached the Final Four of the Champions League last season, for which he was named best coach, the final of the Greek Cup and finished 3rd in the championship.
