PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen qualify for pre-quarterfinals

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu survived early jitters to register a 21-17, 21-15 victory over rising star Anmol Kharb in her women’s singles round of 32 match at the Syed Modi International 2024 badminton in Lucknow on Wednesday.

Paris 2024 Olympians Lakshya Sen and Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa along with women’s singles players Malvika Bansod and Unnati Hooda also advanced to the next round.

PV Sindhu, 18th in the badminton rankings, trailed 17-year-old Anmol Kharb by five points in the first game at 13-8. However, top-seeded Sindhu used her experience to win the next 13 of the 17 points and pocket the first game.

Sindhu, who won the Syed Modi tournament two years ago, kept firm control of the contest after the change of ends to move into the round of 16, where she will take on compatriot Ira Sharma.

Paris 2024 Olympics semi-finalist Lakshya Sen, top-seeded in the men’s singles, defeated Malaysia’s unseeded Sholeh Aidil 21-12, 21-12 and will take on Daniil Dubovenko of Israel for a place in the quarter-finals.

Second-seeded women’s singles player Malvika Bansod also advanced to the next round with a convincing 21-16, 21-7 win over Poland’s Wiktoria Dabczynska.

The 17-year-old Unnati Hooda, who became the youngest Indian badminton player to win a title on the BWF World Tour in 2022, defeated Thailand’s Thamonwan Nithittikrai 21-12, 21-16.

Top-seeded women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated unseeded pair of Ishu Malik-Tanu Malik 21-12, 21-10. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly will be in action later in the day in the women’s doubles.
