There was great interest in the open day at the Kopernikus Gymnasium Niederkassel among parents and fourth graders, because it is an important decision that has to be made by parents whose child has to attend a secondary school in the coming school year. So that parents could get a comprehensive overview at their leisure, the school management invited parents and children to primary schools at separate times. The students from the Ranzeler Drei-Linden School started on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. They were followed every hour by students from Lülsdorf and Mondorf, Niederkassel and Rheidt.
Introductory program instead of demonstration lessons
After the welcome in the rotunda (the auditorium is currently still closed) by school director Dirk Stueber and a musical welcome by the KGN wind class, we went through the classrooms of the high school in groups, accompanied by teachers. This year too, the classic demonstration lessons were dispensed with. Instead, parents and fourth graders were able to take advantage of the opportunity to get to know the atmosphere at KGN, the diverse orientation of the various subjects, the foreign language and travel offerings, the music and work group offerings and much more. At each station there was also the opportunity to have a personal conversation with school and parent representatives.
KGN students show their diverse possibilities
The KGN students had also prepared well for the day and paid close attention to their possible future classmates. There was not only a lot to see in the classrooms, but also on the school street, the students showed how diverse the KGN is. There are, among other things, working groups that deal with sustainability at the KGN and a wide range of sports, ranging from rowing to basketball, running and skiing. But they also thought of the siblings of the fourth graders and offered them the opportunity to try out different sports in the triple sports hall, under supervision. From table tennis to football to badminton and “rope swinging”, the waiting time for their parents and siblings was shortened. The high school currently has 900 students and an 82-strong teaching staff. For space reasons, there will only be one four-grade class in the coming school year.
