[점프볼=서호민 기자] A new step for Korean basketball begins.
The 2024 Korea Cup final will be held for three weeks from December 4 (Wed) to December 20 (Fri) at the Yonsei University Gymnasium in Seoul. This tournament is the first in Korea where elite high school basketball teams and club teams compete together, and is expected to set a new milestone for Korean basketball.
As a blueprint for the development of Korean basketball, the Korea Basketball Association, which is promoting a promotion-based division system, held an integrated basketball tournament inviting top youth teams from all over the country at the end of last year, where elite and club basketball teams interacted.
This tournament is the ultimate Korea Cup competition in which elite high school teams and club teams participate, and is the first step toward implementing the division system in earnest.
The division system aims to provide balanced training and expansion of domestic basketball infrastructure encompassing youth sports, recreational sports, and professional sports, and focuses on laying the foundation for stably securing excellent resources.
‘Division 3’, which will become the strongest league in the nation’s clubs, includes Ansan Sangnok Cup, BDR Club Championship, Incheon Sky Cup, Incheon Sea Cup, Gimpo Geumssal Cup, and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Cup, which are national competitions held by the Korea Basketball Association, and the Korea Sports Council’s President’s Cup. The 7 competitions will be linked, points will be awarded for each competition, and the 32 teams with the highest cumulative points (planned) will be invited to hold the ‘Korea Cup’.
A total of 18 teams participated in this tournament, including 4 high school teams including Gyeongbok High School, Yongsan High School, Hongdae Bu High School, and Baejae High School, which achieved excellent results in competitions hosted by the Middle and High School Basketball Federation, and 14 of the strongest clubs such as Owls, Uptempo, and Black Label, aiming to win the championship. There will be fierce competition.
The group draw is scheduled to be held this week, and for further information regarding the competition, please refer to the notice section on the Korea Basketball Association website (https://www.koreabasketball.or.kr/information/notice_list.php).
