NFL | Chicago Bears fire head coach

(Chicago) The Chicago Bears fired their head coach Matt Eberflus on Friday, the day after a sixth straight defeat.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will take over in the interim, the Illinois club announced in a press release.

“This morning we announced to Matt our decision to take the head coaching role in a new direction,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said. I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organization. »

Eberflus’ 14-32 record in just over two seasons is one of the team’s worst. The only two coaches who have done worse are John Fox (14-34 from 2015 to 2017) and Abe Gibron (11-30-1 from 1972 to 1974).

The Bears began the season with a playoff appearance as their goal following an overhaul of their offensive unit, but are now last in the National Association North Division with a 4-8 record.

Last offseason, they drafted quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick, then acquired six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers.

But rather than climbing the rankings, they are once again at the bottom. Several losses this year have come on the last play of a game.

After starting the season with a 4-2 record, things got more complicated in week eight. After a loss at the hands of the Washington Commanders thanks to a desperation 52-yard pass for a touchdown by Jayden Daniels late in the game, several Bears players openly criticized certain decisions of the coaches.

Coordinator Shane Waldron has since been fired.
