SANTO DOMINGO. The children’s Emmanuel Cuevas won the bronze medal in the Pan American Under-13, Under-15 and Mixed Team Judo Championships held from November 28 to 30 in Varadero, Cuba.
Cuevas, who competed at the -44 kilos weight in children’s B, fought five fights, of which he lost one, right in the semifinal round.
To keep the third place metal, Clase defeated Jalet Moreno, from Cuba, in the first match of the repechage, and then won by ipon against Mateo Arizmedi, from Puerto Rico.
In the first confrontation, the Quisqueyan defeated Lucas Escobar, from Chile, and then defeated Yuberto Thomas, from Cuba. In the semifinal, he lost to Jean Carlos Claro, from Cuba.
The gold in the category was won by Taylor Do Carmo, from the United States, who defeated Sandy Muñoz, from Cuba, in the final, and the other bronze went to Johan Cherrez, from Ecuador.
With the bronze metal, the Dominican Republic took eighth place overall. The big winner was the Brazilian delegation, which won nine gold medals, six silver and 10 bronze, followed by Cuba, which won two gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals.
The United States achieved third place, with two gold, three silver and six bronze medals; Ecuador came fourth, with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals; Canada came fifth, with a gold; Chile took sixth place, with a silver, and Mexico was sixth, with three third place metals.
The Quisqueyan delegation, which made the trip with the support of the Ministry of Sports and parents of the athletes, was made up of Marco Aracena, in the 31 kilos, and Brianna Ángeles, in 38 kilos, both of whom saw action in children’s A; Emmanuel Cuevas, -44 kilos, and Ezequiel Pérez, -48 kilos, as well as the trainers Ángel Jacinto, Elmert Ramírez and Adalberto Ángeles.
Among the parents who made the trip are Vladimir Aracena and Emmanuel Cuevas.
The Pan American U13 and U15 Championships were organized by the Pan American Judo Confederation, in coordination with the Cuban Judo Federation.
