In a video from the ATP, Grigor Dimitrov recited his love letter to tennis, a sport he started playing in his youth and which he was fortunate enough to practice at a professional level.
The Bulgarian was third in the world rankings in 2017 after his Masters title and returned to the top 10 this year at the age of 33.
For the ATP he decided to talk about this “love story” that he has with tennis: “Dear tennis, it is a long love story that we have together. I met you when I was three years old, with a very small bat that my mother had given me.
My first interaction with you was when I hit the ball against a badly damaged wall in my hometown.
Our adventure took a different turn when I stepped onto a tennis court with my father and he taught me how to play.
It was a love story at first sight. I remember when I was 11, I think I won a tournament in France.
When I got home I looked at the trophy and when my parents came I told them ‘I’ll do that’. And that was probably the turning point.
Tennis, you have broken my heart more than once. I don’t know if I should thank you for that, but I do.
They are moments that I had to live through and at the same time they are moments in which you taught me how tennis uses the language of life.
My most memorable moment… with you, tennis, where should I start?
Winning the European Championships at the age of 14, then winning the Junior Grand Slams, playing incredible points against the best players on the court…
From winning very special competitions to anything that could put the biggest smile possible on my face.
I owe all of this to you. Keep it up, tennis!”
