The Department of Sports and the Red Cross drive the campaign “Catalan sport with Valencia”in solidarity with the people affected by DANA in the Valencian Community. The initiative has the collaboration of the Catalan sports sector and the local world and seeks the mobilization and participation of citizens, athletes and entities in the field of sport and physical activity to raise funds for the ’emergency caused by the floods of a few weeks ago.
The Minister of Sports, Berni Álvarez, and the president of the Red Cross in Catalonia, Josep Quitetpresented a campaign that has been running since November 23rd and will last until December 31st.
“As the Department of Sports, we were clear that we had to join together to help the people of Valencia and do it with the help of a reference institution like the Red Cross”, said councilor Álvarez, also emphasizing the thanks for the quick response of all the collaborators who joined the campaign. “We wanted to articulate the campaign in a simple and with an image that generates hope through sportwith an orange hand marked on the ball, which symbolizes the color of the Valencian land”, he remarked.

For his part, the president of the Red Cross in Catalonia, Josep Quitet, emphasized that “this initiative is a collective solidarity action that will make a big difference in the lives of the people affected by the DANA in Valencia . So we can provide direct humanitarian aid to affected peoplecover their most urgent needs and accompany them in the reconstruction of their lives”.

The other entities that support the campaign are: Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia, Union of Sports Councils of Catalonia, Association of Companies of Catalonia for Physical Activity and Fitness, Catalan Association of Institutions of Facility Managers · public sports facilities, Federation of Municipalities of Catalonia and Catalan Association of Municipalities.

The call is addressed to 9,200 clubs, the 72 sports federations and the 43 sports councils of Cataloniaas well as other sports associations, municipal sports centers, City Councils that promote municipal programs in equipment, outdoor sports environments, parks, waterfronts and natural environments, and the general population, in order to promote fundraising days that host competitions or sports physical activity in these spaces.

The response of the Red Cross for DANA
Since the beginning of the emergency, now 3 weeks ago, the Red Cross has mobilized more than 6,200 people to carry out 236,000 assistances to the affected populationshas accommodated nearly 4,200 people in temporary shelters, distributed almost 33,000 hygiene kits and delivered more than 3,200 blankets. It has also offered more than 128,000 allowances to affected people and interveners.
