MLB: Frankie Montas joins Mets, Matthew Boyd joins Cubs

NEW YORK – The New York Mets have added Frankie Montas to their rotation, signing a two-year, $34 million contract to the veteran right-hander.

Aged 31, Montas is expected to receive $17 million for each year of the contract. He can opt out of the pact after the 2025 season.

Montas was 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA, throwing 148 strikeouts in 150 2/3 innings and 30 starts with the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers this season. He was 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts with the Brewers, who acquired him just before the trade deadline.

Montas declined his share of a $20 million mutual option last month, receiving $2 million as part of his contract buyout.

Matthew Boyd with the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have added Matthew Boyd to their rotation after agreeing to a two-year, US$29 million contract with the left-handed pitcher, a person familiar with the negotiations revealed.

This person requested anonymity to speak with The Associated Press on Monday because the agreement is conditional on a medical examination.

The 33-year-old veteran could pocket a bonus of $1 million over the two years of the contract.

Boyd, who previously underwent Tommy John surgery, was 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA in eight starts with the Cleveland Guardians last season. He also made three postseason starts for the American League Central Division champions, allowing one run and recording 14 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings of work.

The player from Washington will join a rotation that already includes Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon. The Cubs finished in second place in the National League Central Division, after compiling an 83-79 record in each of their last two campaigns.
