FC Bayern – BVB: DFB checks Leroy Sané’s action – suspension is imminent

Will an FC Bayern star be subsequently banned? The DFB control committee checked the elbow strike by national player Leroy Sané (28) in the top game on Saturday evening against Borussia Dortmund (1:1). This process is a preliminary step before an official investigation is initiated. The DFB confirmed a corresponding report from “Sport Bild”.

After the 1-1 draw between Dortmund and Munich, a video from the second half appeared on the Internet. You can see Sané hitting his Dortmund opponent Pascal Groß in the face with his elbow. The BVB midfielder didn’t make a big deal out of it, touched his face once and then continued playing. He didn’t let himself fall, which could have called the video referee into action.

Main referee Sven Jablonski didn’t notice the action off the ball. There was therefore no penalty for the Bayern professional during the game.

But the scene could now be subsequently sanctioned. In principle, a penalty is possible if images or videos of misconduct subsequently emerge. This also applies to actions off the pitch. In 2023, for example, the control committee examined an offense committed by Kevin Behrens (33/then at Union Berlin), who held a pyro-torch in his hand at a fan party on the stadium balcony.

At that time, the DFB control committee decided not to continue the process and simply issued a warning. Should the committee now decide to investigate Sané, the DFB sports court will ultimately decide on a punishment – in the most serious case, a match ban for the FC Bayern player.

Former referee Thorsten Kinhöfer told “Bild”: “If Groß drops down and holds his face, like most players do these days, it will probably be considered assault. If the referee and the VAR saw it – it only goes through if you interpret it as a reflex. Sané was lucky.”
