Below is the official plot of the film:

1860. Giuseppe Garibaldi begins the adventure of the Thousand from Quarto surrounded by the enthusiasm of the young idealists who came from all the regions of Italy, and with his faithful group of officers, among whom we notice a new profile, that of the colonel from Palermo Vincenzo Giordano Orsini. Among the many soldiers recruited there are two Sicilians, Domenico Tricò, a farmer who emigrated to the North, and Rosario Spitale, an illusionist. Having landed in Sicily, in Marsala, the Thousand begin to fight with the Bourbon army, whose numerical preponderance is immediately evident. In these conditions, it appears almost impossible for the general to breach the enemy defense and penetrate Palermo. But when he is almost forced to retreat, Garibaldi devises an ingenious plan. He entrusts a diversionary maneuver to Colonel Orsini, who sets up a column of wounded with a small group of soldiers, who are entrusted with the very delicate task of making Jean-Luc Von Mechel, Swiss commander of the royal army, believe that the general is retreating into the interior of the island. Thus begins a chess game played on the edge of the imponderable, whose final outcome will be paradoxical and surprising.
