EXETER – A group of students at South Huron District high school is continuing its positive work, most recently raising $1,287 for Jessica’s House Hospice.

The group, which calls itself the Kindness Project, hosted a fundraising badminton tournament at the school on Saturday, Dec. 7. Featuring about 40 participants, including South Huron District high school students, as well as their family members, the event featured raffles and prizes donated by local businesses.
Grade 12 student Bria McCann, who started the Kindness Project last year, said the group chose Jessica’s House as the recipient of its fundraising efforts because the late Jessica Hamather, after whom the hospice is named, is a former SHDHS student “and has a special place in our hearts.”
McCann said Jessica’s House “does great things,” and it’s important to support it during the holidays.
Last year’s badminton tournament also served as a fundraiser for Jessica’s House.
This year’s event included competitive and non-competitive brackets. Winners this year were Ryan Little and Evan Desjardine. Both competed last year, and Desjardine was also one of last year’s winners.
Other initiatives for the Kindness Project this year include making Christmas cards for Exeter Villa residents, helping Exeter Elementary students with Santa letters and fundraising for Igloolik, an Inuit community in Nunavut.
The Kindness Project has about 25 members from Grades 7-12.
