After the Sinner case: WADA changes rules

The World Anti-Doping Agency has responded to the doping allegations against Jannik Sinner by changing the regulations.

Despite the ongoing proceedings against the 23-year-old from Sesto, which stems from an objection by WADA, the Montreal-based agency has announced that it will change the rules regarding sporting consequences for similar cases.

No more doping bans in cases of “involuntaryity” – in force from 2027

Athletes who are proven not to have intentionally doped, but rather to have taken a banned substance involuntarily, should no longer be banned. Previously, if it was proven that “unconscious doping” occurred, the ban was halved.

The new rules are scheduled to come into force in 2027. According to insiders, it seems conceivable that Sinner’s lawyers will base their defense strategy on the new regulations.

There is still no date for a hearing before the Sports Court in Lausanne. It will be decided there whether Sinner will be banned or not after involuntarily taking the banned drug Clostebol.

Jannik Sinner is enjoying a few final days of rest before he resumes full training for the new tennis season. The first big goal of the season is to defend the title at the Australian Open from January 12th to 26th.
