Badminton for vulnerable people: OMBOLD and Badminton Denmark join forces

A new collaboration between the NGO OMBOLD and Badminton Denmark will help people affected by abuse, homelessness and psychological vulnerability.

Since 2003, OMBOLD has created strong communities for people in vulnerable positions with the help of football. This year, with support from the AP Møllerske Støttefond, the NGO has expanded its activities to include floorball, running and badminton, and it is precisely in this connection that OMBOLD and Badminton Denmark have now entered into a collaboration.

The collaboration between OMBOLD and Badminton Denmark is part of a larger vision to make sports accessible to everyone – regardless of life situation. With badminton as a new sport, it is opened up so that even more people in vulnerable positions can become part of the community that naturally arises when you play sports together.

This ambition is shared by Badminton Denmark, which sees great opportunities in the collaboration.

– We see great potential in the collaboration with OMBOLD, because together we can reach people who otherwise would not have found their way to a badminton club. We hope that with badminton we can create good experiences for a vulnerable target group, and here a number of local clubs are a central player, as it is they who, together with OMBOLD, must create the framework for new players from a vulnerable background to feel welcome, says Kristian Pinderup Langbak, director of Badminton Denmark.

A step forward for OMBOLD

Badminton Denmark will use its knowledge of badminton to develop a training and tournament concept for beginners. They will also help to find clubs that can offer training that suits the target group.

And badminton in particular has quite a lot of potential. when it comes to appealing to vulnerable people, says director of OMBOLD, Martin S. Pedersen.

– Badminton has qualities that make it suitable for becoming popular among people who do not normally play sports. Badminton is a sport that almost everyone has tried, it is easy to get started with and can be played in many places. With Badminton Denmark’s extensive experience and the clubs’ local affiliation, we are sure that together we can get many new badminton players on the court.

Part of a larger project

The collaboration is part of a three-year initiative supported by the AP Møllerske Støttefond, where OMBOLD works to introduce vulnerable adults to several sports in addition to football. The pilot project includes badminton, floorball and running/walking, and the badminton part will be rolled out in collaboration with local associations in Copenhagen, Aalborg, Holbæk and Sønderborg.
