Srinagar, December 12: Many parts of the plains of Kashmir valley received the first snowfall of the season while the upper areas received moderate rain. Officials gave this information on Thursday.
Officials said the minimum temperature has improved at most places in the valley.
Light snowfall occurred in the plains of Shopian, Pulwama and Baramulla as well as the upper reaches of Anantnag, Budgam and Bandipora. However, there was no snowfall in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Light to moderate snowfall occurred in the upper reaches of the valley including tourist places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Tangmarg, Gurez and Zojila Pass.
Officials said the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for traffic due to snow accumulation at Zojila Pass, while the Bandipora-Gurez road and Mughal Road were also closed.
He said that the authorities have deployed people and the help of machines to clear snow from the roads and restore traffic.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted improvement in the weather from Thursday afternoon and expected mainly dry conditions to persist till December 20.
Meanwhile, due to cloudy sky, the night temperature increased in the entire valley including Srinagar.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 0.5 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature in Gulmarg was minus 5.2 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature in Pahalgam was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of 0.5 degrees Celsius and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus one degree Celsius.
