The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros on Friday.
The Astros would get infielder Isaac Paredes, right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski and third baseman Cam Smith in return.
Tucker, 27, suffered a fractured tibia last season, limiting him to 78 games. He hit 23 home runs to go along with 49 RBIs and 11 stolen bases for averages of .289/.408/.585 in 339 at-bats.
The New York Yankees were also in the running for Tucker’s services.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations with the Astros,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. Ultimately, I’m glad Mr. Tucker isn’t in the American League East, or even the American League. But it’s a nice catch for the Chicago Cubs. »
In 663 career games, all with the Astros, Tucker had 125 home runs and 94 stolen bases with an OPS of .870. Three times named to the All-Star Game, he also won the gold glove and the silver bat.
He was the organization’s fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft.
Paredes was acquired by the Cubs at the recent trade deadline from Tampa Bay. In 52 games in Chicago and 101 in Tampa, he totaled 19 home runs and 80 RBIs with a .238 batting average.
Wesneski made 7 starts in 28 appearances on the mound. He had a 3.86 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched.
Smith, who is only 21 years old, was selected 14th overall by the Cubs in 2024. He posted averages of .313/.396/.609 across three levels of the minor leagues last season, hitting 7 homers and producing 24 points in 32 games.
