[13th (Reuters)]- The Australian Open, the first of the four major tennis tournaments, announced on the 13th nine players recommended by the organizer to enter, with 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) among the men’s names. Connected.
Wavrinka, who has played in the Australian Open 18 times, defeated Rafael Nadal (Spain), who was ranked No. 1 in the world at the time, in 2014 to win his first Grand Slam. He has a total record of 43 wins and 17 losses at the Australian Open.
Wavrinka, 39, said: “I’m really grateful to have been able to receive a wild card. Melbourne is a special place for me. It’s where I won my first Grand Slam and it’s one of the biggest milestones in my career. I’m really looking forward to getting back on the court in Melbourne.”
On the women’s side, local Ayla Tomljanovic (31), who has struggled with injuries since reaching a career-high world No. 32 in April 2023, qualified to participate on the recommendation of the organizers.
The Australian Open main tournament will be held from January 12th to 26th next year.
