New rules in judo will allow you to use your head to project and defend

The new rules that will come into force in 2025 in judo competitions will allow the use of the head to throw and defend, reported the international federation (IJF).

This rule will not be applied in cadet category tests, in which the use of the head will be penalized with “shido” (minor fault).

All jacket holds and under-the-belt holds at the top of the inner thigh will also be permitted unless the referee considers them to be used in a negative manner.

But hooking the legs with the hand or arm, grabbing the legs, grabbing the pants and touching the leg from the top of the inner thigh downwards is prohibited, and will be penalized with “shido.”

In addition, the bear hug in the tachi-waza projection will be permitted except with the hands or with the hands and arms intertwined, forming a circle, which will be penalized with “shido”, among other changes in the regulations.

The new rules will make their international debut at the Paris Grand Slam next February.

According to the IJF, the objective of the changes is “to put the resolution of each fight in the hands of the athletes.”
