If Kylian Mbappé won the France Football best French player prize, Antoine Griezmann did not place his compatriot in first place. For his part, Karim Benzema didn’t even put him on the podium.
Like the Ballon d’Or, some votes can sometimes be surprising. At the end of the 2023-2024 season, Kylian Mbappé won the “France Football” French player prize, the details of the votes were revealed this Saturday. Quadruple winner, the Real Madrid player did not win as early as in previous years. With 56 points, he is ahead of William Saliba by only five points. Mike Maignan (24 pts) completes the podium.
This Saturday, France Football revealed the details of the votes of the former winners, who were responsible for electing this year’s winner. And some choices are surprising to say the least. Crowned in 2016, Antoine Griezmann chose Alexandre Lacazette as number one, ahead of Kylian Mbappé and… Romain Del Castillo. The Brestois, 14th in the ranking, collected a single point, awarded by the Atlético de Madrid striker who probably wanted to reward the Bretons’ good performance in Ligue 1.
Saliba is number one for Mbappé
Winner in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2021, Karim Benzema completely skipped his former teammate in Blue by not placing him in the top three, just like N’Golo Kanté. The Al-Ittihad striker named Eduardo Camavinga first, ahead of Bradley Barcola and William Saliba. His friend in the middle placed the Arsenal defender as number one, ahead of Koundé and Camavinga.
Winner of this 2024 edition, Mbappé chose to put Saliba in the lead, ahead of his teammates at Real Camavinga. A prize that the Gunners defender also “deserved” according to the captain of the Blues.
