Angelo Binaghi, the president of the Italian tennis federation, is a happy man. At the end of a year 2024 where Italy dominated our sport (Sinner world number 1, Paolini double-finalist in the Major, Italian coronation in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup), he did not hide his joy at our colleagues from Ubitennis.
Returning to several subjects, he was notably questioned about Matteo Berrettini. Slowed down by injuries, the Italian colossus still managed to win three ATP titles while leading the Italian selection to the Davis Cup title (with Sinner).
On this subject, Binaghi was very complimentary of the current 34th player in the world: “A great leader, an absolute creator. The day he stops playing, and I hope it will be as late as possible, I see him very well as captain of the national team, in the role that Volandri has now.
In the last Davis Cup he was able to motivate the guys from the bench, when he couldn’t play, and this year he was an absolute protagonist. A charisma that is not given to everyone. I love it. »
