YSTEAD Ystads IF lost the series final against IFK Kristianstad.

Are the league leaders at risk of now also losing their coach?

– I have a bit of “unfinished business” in Flensburg, says Oscar Carlén about the big German club looking for a coach again.

Ystads IF has dominated the handball league this year and played several “series finals” this autumn when the teams behind showed no stability and took turns to be second behind the Skåne.

When the new runner-up Kristianstad came to visit for a hot derby, YIF led the series with six points despite having played a game less.

Kristianstad got off to a brilliant start to the match in front of a packed arena and scored an almost perfect first half: 17-10 at halftime to the visitors.

– There is a passivity and uncertainty among the players in the first half that I have not seen before this season. We have been at a disadvantage several times earlier this year and managed to turn around, but when it became six or seven, we were cut by it, says Ystad’s coach Oscar Carlén and points to the eight technical errors before the break.

But already 13 minutes into the second half, Ystad had contact since it was almost only Elliot Stenmalm, last year in Ystad, who found the visitors’ goal right after the break: 21-22.

But YIF never caught up, but instead Kristianstad was able to win 30-28 after the home team reduced it to a goal behind again with 28 seconds left.

– I think we completed the second half in a very good way. But it was in the first half, or the first 20 minutes, that we lost this match, says Carlén and summarizes:

– It really hurts to lose against Kristianstad at home.

Regrets leaving Flensburg

A heavy night for the home team, then, and the question is whether you risk losing your coach as well? Maybe already in the middle of the season?

His previous club, the German powerhouse Flensburg, fired their coach Nicolej Krickau this weekend.

When Flensburg hunted for a coach last time, 1.5 years ago, and finally chose Krickau, Carlén was on the Germans’ “short list” and even met his old club on the matter.

– I had a meeting with them and then there were three or four of us left, from what I understood of them, says Carlén, who believes that Krickau was the first choice all along.

Carlén, who in 2022 led YIF to the club’s first SM gold in 30 years and to a new SM final this spring, recently extended with Ystads IF until 2028. He is doing his eighth consecutive season as coach of the club’s representative team (the first three as an assistant) .

He says he hasn’t heard anything from Flensburg since they kicked Krickau this weekend.

Are you interested if they want you?

– I have a contract with YIF, but Flensburg is always interesting to me. When I think back on my own career, I had my best years there and feel that I have a bit of “unfinished business” in Flensburg. The transition to Hamburg (2011) was not completely successful and if I had been a bit older and more mature I would not have left Flensburg there. I was involved in starting something there but that was after I had left as they had since their successful era.

Do you have a buyout clause in your new contract?

– Not this summer, but next I will have it, he says.
