Football: Michael Vick will become coach at Norfolk State

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick has told those close to him that he plans to accept the head coaching job at Norfolk State, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

The Spartans are finalizing the deal to hire a new coach, according to sources.

Norfolk officials declined to comment specifically on Vick when contacted by ESPNbut said they plan to release a statement soon saying they are following the formal steps of their hiring process.

Vick, 44, informed Sacramento officials that he was no longer in the running for their open head coaching position and told them he was taking a job closer to home in the state of Norfolk. Vick’s hometown of Newport News, Virginia, is about 20 miles from the Spartans’ campus.

As a player, Vick led Virginia Tech to the 1999 national title game and became the first black quarterback to be the NFL’s first overall pick. He has been an NFL analyst for Fox Sports since his retirement in 2017.
