Simona Halep has to fight for her place in the main draw of the Australian Open 2025. But the Romanian at least got a wildcard for qualification.

Simona Halep didn’t play much tennis after her comeback in Miami. This was also due to the fact that the Romanian quickly developed physical problems. And that some hoped-for wild cards for tournaments failed to materialize. At Wimbledon or at the US Open, for example. Halep had to take a break for almost two years due to a doping ban.
Seen this way, it is no wonder that the 33-year-old is currently only listed at position 877 in the WTA charts. Which is of course very far from a fixed place in a tournament. And it wouldn’t have been enough to qualify for the Australian Open either. Tennis Australia has now given Halep at least a wildcard for the elimination competition before the first major of the year. In 2018, Halep reached the final in Melbourne – but lost to Caroline Wozniacki.
Otherwise, six out of eight wildcards went to Australian players. And one to the Slovakian Renata Jamrichova, who was successful among the juniors in 2024. The same procedure also applies to the men: Rei Sakamoto, this year’s junior champion, was assigned a fixed place in the qualifying draw.
However, there is also a very prominent name on the men’s list: Cruz Hewitt, Lleyton’s son, can try out for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament for adults.
