“Sorry, Florian Wirtz!” This is how Fabian Scheler, one of the hosts, begins He can kickthe final football podcast episode of the year. The Leverkusen talent didn’t make it into his team of the year. For this he receives a stern look from the second host, Oliver Fritsch, which looks not unlike that of a strict Italian coach. Of course, Fritsch sees it differently.

At the end of the year, the two hosts choose the most important players of the season. Gender: doesn’t matter. League and country: doesn’t matter. But after this European Championship: really only one Englishman. The performances at the European Championships in Germany play just as important a role for both hosts as the Champions League. Or the share of the Leverkusen title. The women’s Olympic tournament and political education are also further criteria.

A lot of Spanish is spoken in each team. One of the best German footballers and the most famous German coach of today receive their critical appreciation. And most of the players honored in this episode are also the ones who will matter in the new year.

And because there are still last things to do at the end of the year, the hosts answer the most pressing listener questions. And make a promise for the coming year.

“He can kick” is the football podcast from ZEIT ONLINE. It appears every two weeks and is dedicated to the best footballers of our time. We talk less about tactics and more about what really matters in football: the individuality of the players. You can find all episodes here.
