A few weeks after his career ended, Netflix announced that it was collaborating with ex-tennis professional Rafael Nadal on a documentary about his life.
One month after announcing his retirement from tennis, the streaming provider Netflix announced that it was collaborating with Rafael Nadal (38) on a series about his life. As Netflix announced, the biopic will be produced by Skydance Sports.
The as yet untitled series will shed light on both Nadal’s career as a professional tennis player and his life off the tennis court. It shows never-before-seen material from the Spaniard’s personal archive and provides access to the people behind the athlete, his family and his close circle of trainers and advisors. His comeback in the 2024 season after having to sit out much of 2023 due to injury will also be discussed.
The series about the 22-time Grand Slam title holder in men’s singles and owner of two Olympic gold medals is directed by Oscar nominee Zach Heinzerling (40).
“I never thought I would do something like this”
Nadal had to be convinced about the project, he admits: “I never thought I would do something like this, but I got a call from David Ellison and his words along with an amazing project they showed me, really convinced me it was the right thing to do.” Everyone will be able to see what his life has been like during his tennis career.
Without support, the series, which does not yet have an official start date, would not have been possible, he emphasizes: “I am sure that the final product, the documentary, will be amazing and that it will be seen all over the world. My thanks Thanks to David Ellison and his team at Skydance for believing in and developing this project. My family and team for allowing me to be filmed over the past year. I know it hasn’t been easy for any of us was. My colleagues and Like-minded people who took the time to stand in front of the camera for some time and thanks to the tournaments around the world that made the job easier, it wasn’t easy.”
He also indicated on the Internet platform “The Players’ Tribune” that it wasn’t always easy for the Spaniard, who quoted him as saying: “A few years ago I had a very difficult moment mentally. (…) After all, we are humans, not superheroes.”
