Schröder flash farewell after trade? Warriors probably hot for NBA superstar

Dennis Schröder was traded from the Nets to the Warriors. But for how long? A bigger fish awaits the team, which could send the German superstar on a journey again.

“I’m thrilled to be here and to be part of something special.” If he contributes to success every day and his family feels good, “then of course I want to end my career here,” enthused Dennis Schröder after the trade from the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors.

But could the German basketball star soon leave his new employer? Unlikely but conceivable, says NBA insider Shams Charania from “ESPN”. Because the Warriors apparently still have big plans before the trade deadline on February 6, 2025.

“Golden State remains in the hunt for a star player and it is certainly possible to resell Schröder’s contract as part of a larger deal,” his report said. And with head coach Steve Kerr’s team still having championship aspirations, Schröder’s time in San Francisco could actually be limited.

Rumors have been circulating about the Golden State Warriors and Heat superstar Jimmy Butler for some time. It probably won’t be enough for Miami to make a deep playoff run this year; according to reports, the small forward wants to leave the franchise to reach for his first NBA title elsewhere.

Butler to the Warriors: Realistic?

The Warriors would be able to put together a package with players and picks that would offset Butler’s high salary. To make room for him, players like Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga or Schröder could leave the team with a handful of draft picks.

A symbiosis deal for both sides. Golden State would make a statement in the competitive West and show that the Curry era in the NBA is far from over. In return, Miami would be grateful to get a leader like Schröder. Because in contrast to the Nets, the Heat don’t want to admit to a rebuild yet.

Schröder trade: Warriors greats excited

If you listen to the statements from head coach Steve Kerr and superstar Steph Curry, an imminent farewell seems more hypothetical than realistic. Both were extremely pleased about basketball world champion Dennis Schröder’s move to the Warriors.

“I’m thrilled,” Kerr said after his team’s 133-143 win against the Dallas Mavericks and added with a smile: “I told Dennis that he kicked my ass on three different continents.” And if you can’t defeat someone, you just have to ally with them.

In his comments, Kerr referred, among other things, to the NBA playoffs in the 2022/2023 season, when Schröder and the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals: “He was brilliant there.”

Superstar Steph Curry also says he is looking forward to his new teammate. Schröder “gives us everything we need. I’m really excited to play with him now,” said the 36-year-old, who led the Warriors to four championship titles between 2015 and 2022
