MILTON KEYNES – Liam Lawson will be the new teammate of Dutch Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen in Red Bull next season.

The 22-year-old New Zealand pilot will replace the Mexican Sergio Pérez, who left the team early on Wednesday due to poor results. The stable reported about it on the website.

“This is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream because I’ve been working on it since I was eight years old,” said Lawson, who has been working as a reserve driver at Red Bull since 2022. For the sister team Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri), he has eleven starts in Formula 1 and his best finish was ninth.

“He showed that he knows how to drive for results, but that he is also a racer and is not afraid of fighting with the best. With his engagement, we continue the tradition of educating drivers, such as Sebastian Vettel and, of course, Max Verstappen.” said Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Pérez left Red Bull after four years, during which he won five Grands Prix and was runner-up in the world last year. In June, he extended his contract until 2026, but he left the team after poor results.

Although the 34-year-old Mexican started the season well and was second three times and third once in the first five races, he did not make it onto the podium after that. In the World Championship, Pérez finished eighth, the worst of his time at Red Bull, while Verstappen claimed his fourth consecutive title.
