Diego León Osorio, free and awaiting the appeal of the Supreme Court

Last week, the Superior Court of Antioquia ratified an 8-year sentence for drug trafficking, but it is not yet final or executed.

On December 13, the Superior Court of Antioquia confirmed, in the second instance, the 8-year sentence Diego León Osorio for drug trafficking. This is due to what happened on April 9, 2023 when the former soccer player was captured at the José María Córdova Airport in Rionegro, Antioquia, trying to leave the country with a kilogram of cocaine hydrochloride in his suitcase heading to Madrid, Spain.

Howeverthis decision of the Superior Court of Antioquia “is neither final nor enforceable”. This means that Diego León Osorio is free and is awaiting the extraordinary appeal of cassation before the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.

This Osorio drug trafficking case is still pending a final resolution, the sentence has not been carried out. The legal situation of the former player of the Colombian National Team and Atlético Nacional is one of freedom until the Supreme Court of Justice issues the final ruling. The date is unknown.

Diego León was one of the most important defenders of Colombian professional football in the 90s. His name was made known at a U-20 World Cup in 1989. and in 1992 he was part of the Colombian National Team that played in the Barcelona Olympic Games.a team in which he shared with figures such as Faustino Asprilla, Iván René Valenciano, Miguel Calero, Faryd Mondragón, Harold Lozano, among others.

In the FPC, Osorio played with 3 teams: Atlético Nacional, Deportivo Independiente Medellín and Independiente Santa Fe. In the green of Antioquia he lived his best years, becoming champion in 1991 and 1994.
