BaşakşehirS European ⁣Dream Deferred: A Discussion with‌ Former Turkish International, Okan Yilmaz

The UEFA Conference League journey for Istanbul Başakşehir came⁣ to an end this week with a 1-1 draw against ⁢Cercle Brugge. The ⁣result saw them finish 26th, narrowly missing their target of a top 24 finish. Joining us today to analyse this result and Başakşehir’s performance is former Turkish international and ‌football pundit, Okan ⁢Yilmaz.

Welcome, Okan. Thanks for joining us.

Okan Yilmaz: ⁤ It’s a pleasure to be here.

Let’s get straight into it. Başakşehir’s ⁤final group stage match was a tightly contested affair. What were your initial thoughts‍ on the game?

Okan Yilmaz: It was a ⁣frustrating night for Başakşehir. They showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately ⁢lacked the composure and clinical ‌finishing needed ‍to secure the win. The draw ultimately left ⁤them‍ short of their goal, and you⁣ could see⁤ the disappointment ‌on their faces at the final whistle.

Certainly a bitter pill to⁤ swallow. Despite taking an early lead ⁣through Piatek, Başakşehir couldn’t hold on. ‌ What do you⁤ think contributed to the defensive lapse ⁤that allowed‌ Brunner to equalize?

Okan‌ Yilmaz: I think Başakşehir became a bit complacent after taking the lead.‍ They sat ‍back too deep, inviting pressure⁣ from Cercle Brugge. Brunner’s goal was a result of some sloppy defending and a lack of concentration.

You mentioned the importance of clinical finishing. Başakşehir created several good chances throughout the match, particularly‌ in the first‍ half. What aspects‌ of their attacking‍ play ‌need improvement?

Okan Yilmaz: While they created chances, Başakşehir lacked⁣ the cutting edge needed in the‌ final third. Their decision-making in key moments wasn’t sharp enough. They ⁣need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

Looking ahead, how big of a setback is this for Başakşehir,⁢ particularly considering their ‌ambitions for European competition?

okan Yilmaz: It’s ‍definitely a setback, no doubt. Falling short of their target will be disappointing. However, I wouldn’t say it’s a complete failure. This experience will hopefully serve‍ as a learning curve for the team moving forward.

Readers, what are your thoughts on Başakşehir’s ⁣performance? Do you agree with Okan’s assessment?
