Back to Vienna: A Conversation with Thomas Enqvist on Zverev’s Return
Welcome back to On teh Baseline, everyone! Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming former world No. 4 and Wimbledon runner-up, Thomas Enqvist, to discuss the exciting news that Alexander Zverev will be returning to the Erste Bank Open in Vienna next year. thomas, welcome to the show!
Thomas: Thanks for having me.It’s always great to talk tennis, especially when it involves a talent like Zverev.
Moderator: Absolutely. Zverev has made it clear that Vienna holds a special place in his heart, and he’s aiming to replicate his 2021 victory. What are your thoughts on his decision to return to Vienna so early?
Thomas: I think it shows he loves the event and feels comfortable there. Vienna has a fantastic atmosphere,a knowledgeable crowd, and historically, the tournament organizers do a great job of putting on a first-class event. It’s a great place for players to build momentum as the indoor season kicks off.
Moderator: Exactly. And speaking of momentum, Zverev finished 2024 on a high note, winning Paris-Bercy and looking strong at the ATP Finals. Do you think this might be the year he finally breaks through and wins a grand Slam?
Thomas: He certainly has the talent. We saw glimpses of his brilliance at the US Open this year, even though he didn’t make it past the quarterfinals. The mental game and consistency are crucial at that level, and it seems like he’s maturing as a player. With another year on the tour, adding muscle and some strategic tweaks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s right there next Grand Slam season.
Moderator: engaging points. Now, the article mentions that the Erste Bank Open organizers are planning some “innovative entertainment elements” for 2025. What’s your take on mixing tennis with innovative entertainment?
Thomas: It’s a great idea. Tennis is facing stiff competition from other sports and forms of entertainment. To attract new fans and keep the existing ones engaged, tournaments need to think outside the box. Regardless of the specific innovations, the key is to strike a balance and ensure the tennis remains the primary focus.
