Buitres soar to Eighth TBS San Cristóbal Title
The Buitres basketball club etched their name in history once again, securing their eighth championship in the XXXIV Torneo de Baloncesto Superior (TBS San Cristóbal 2024).In a thrilling three-game series, they defeated the Lobos de Canastica 74-67, clinching the coveted Copa BanReservas.
This victory marks a significant milestone for the Buitres, placing them second in the all-time TBS San Cristóbal championship rankings, trailing only the ciro Pérez club with its impressive 16 titles. The Avispones de Pueblo Nuevo and Laguneros de Madre vieja Norte follow with three championships each, while the Huracanes de Madre Vieja Sur and the Yagüate team boast two titles apiece.
The Buitres’ triumph was spearheaded by a stellar performance from reinforcement Luismal Ferreiras, who delivered a dominant double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds in his debut. Fellow reinforcement Yeison Colomé contributed considerably with 18 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.Ferreiras’s victory in San Cristóbal adds to his already impressive 2024 trophy collection, which includes championships in the Santiago, Distrito nacional, and San Francisco de Macorís basketball tournaments. Juan Bautista chipped in with 16 points, Rey Abad added nine points and nine rebounds, and José ”Tongo” Corporán provided six points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Despite a valiant effort, the Lobos de Canastica fell short.Reinforcements Kevin Pérez and Anyeuri Castillo led the charge with 26 points and seven rebounds, and 20 points and seven rebounds respectively.
The championship game was graced by the presence of Minister of Sports Kelvin Cruz, who performed the ceremonial tip-off. Cruz announced a generous donation of one million pesos from the Ministry of Sports to support the tournament and participating clubs.
Senator Gustavo Lara Salazar, Rafael Uribe (President of the Dominican Basketball Federation), and Felipe Mateo (President of the San Cristóbal Basketball Association) joined Cruz at the event. lara Salazar also pledged 500,000 pesos from the Ministry of Youth, with an additional 100,000 pesos earmarked for the champion Buitres to celebrate their victory with their fans.
The TBS San Cristóbal 2024 was dedicated to the memory of Douglas Hasbún, a founding member of the San cristóbal Basketball Association, currently led by Felipe Mateo and delegates from the five participating clubs.

We saw incredible individual performances throughout the tournament, especially from Luismal Ferreiras, who delivered a dominant double-double in his debut. What was it like to play alongside such a talented reinforcement?
Tongo: Luismal is a phenomenal player, and he brought a real presence to the court. We knew coming into the series what he was capable of, and he lived up to the hype. Having him alongside Yeison colomé, who also played exceptionally well, was a huge boost for our team. We were able to build chemistry quickly, and that was a key factor in our success.
It’s clear the Buitres have cemented their place as a dominant force in Dominican basketball, now second only to the legendary Ciro Pérez club. How does this win feel within the context of the Buitres’ legacy?
Tongo: This win means a lot for the Buitres. it’s another step toward solidifying our place in history. We respect the Ciro Pérez club and what thay have accomplished, but we’re hungry for more. We want to keep pushing,keep winning,and eventually reach that top spot.
