This prestigious event, supported by the Ministry of Sports under Kelvin Cruz’s leadership and the National Institute of Physical Education (Inefi) headed by Alberto rodríguez, promises to showcase the talent and dedication of young judokas across the nation.
Yesterday saw the culmination of preparatory activities with a technical conference and weigh-in, setting the stage for the exciting competitions commencing at 9:00 AM today. A formal opening ceremony will follow at 11:00 AM, marking the official start of this important sporting event.
Gilberto garcía, president of Fedojudo, highlighted the tournament’s focus on nurturing the future of Dominican judo. Athletes in the U-13 and U-15 age groups, both male and female, will compete fiercely, vying for the coveted title of national champion.
“Our primary goal is to cultivate a strong foundation and foster the development of young judokas,” García emphasized.
The championship will see the participation of 220 carefully selected athletes representing various educational institutions. Following regional competitions, the top two performers from each region will advance, ultimately culminating in the crowning of national champions in both age categories. This rigorous selection process ensures that only the most skilled and dedicated athletes reach the pinnacle of this prestigious tournament.

The tatami mats are humming with anticipation as young judokas prepare too clash in the National Children’s School Judo Championship. This annual event, a testament to the Dominican Republic’s dedication to nurturing future sporting icons, has always held a special place in my heart. To delve deeper into its significance, we’re joined today by three-time Olympian and national judo champion, Maria Garcia.
Welcome, Maria!
Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to talk about judo, especially when it involves our rising stars.
Indeed. The tournament boasts 220 carefully selected athletes, the cream of the crop from various educational institutions. A rigorous selection process, with only the top two performers from each region advancing, ensures only the most dedicated and skilled individuals reach this stage. What are your thoughts on this approach?
It’s absolutely crucial. Competitive judo demands immense discipline, both mental and physical. By focusing on the top performers, we’re not only celebrating individual talent but also instilling a culture of excellence from a young age. This early exposure to high-level competition is invaluable for their progress.
The tournament prioritizes U-13 and U-15 age groups, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent from the ground up. Do you believe focusing on such young athletes is the right approach?
Absolutely. Judo is a sport that requires years of dedicated training and honing technique. By investing in these young athletes, we’re laying the foundation for future champions. It’s about nurturing their passion, developing their skills, and instilling the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance that are integral to the sport.
Alongside the athletic aspect, events like this also play a vital role in promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles amongst youth.
Precisely! In today’s world, it’s more crucial than ever to encourage children to engage in physical activity. Judo, with its emphasis on discipline, self-control, and respect, offers a holistic approach to personal development.
The Dominican Judo Federation, under the leadership of Gilberto Garcia, deserves commendation for their commitment to hosting this prestigious event.

This year’s National Children’s School Judo Championship promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and dedication.
