Citadins Badminton Team Shines at Trois-Rivières Tournament
The Université de Montréal Citadins badminton team recently competed in their second tournament of the season, held in Trois-Rivières on October 26th and 27th. The team delivered notable performances, showcasing their talent and dedication.
Leading the charge for the women’s team was Catherine Plante-Gonthier, a standout player pursuing a DESS in evaluation, intervention, and psychological support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Plante-Gonthier dominated the competition, securing victories in all six of her matches.A highlight of her performance was a thrilling doubles win alongside teammate Justine Hodgson against a formidable opponent from McGill University.
On the men’s side, Philippe Bélanger, a second-year music student, demonstrated significant advancement, winning four matches. Head coach Alexis Gohier-Drolet praised Bélanger’s progress, noting his ability to compete effectively against top-ranked players in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The Citadins badminton team will look to build on their success at their next tournament, scheduled for November 16th and 17th at the Université de Montréal. With their strong performances and dedication to improvement, the team is poised for a successful season.

You must be ecstatic about the team’s performance in trois-rivières. Catherine Plante-Gonthier was unstoppable, winning all six of her matches, including an remarkable doubles victory with Justine Hodgson. What were your thoughts witnessing her dominance on the court?
Alexis Gohier-Drolet: Catherine is truly a force to be reckoned with. Her dedication to the sport is evident in every match. She’s worked incredibly hard, and it’s fantastic to see her talent shine through. The doubles win with Justine was particularly impressive; they showed great teamwork and strategy against a very strong mcgill duo.
On the men’s side,philippe Bélanger’s performance was also noteworthy,winning four matches. You mentioned his meaningful advancement. Can you elaborate on that?
Alexis Gohier-Drolet: Philippe has made remarkable progress this season.He’s really come into his own, displaying a newfound confidence and tactical awareness. His ability to compete effectively against top-ranked players in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
This seems to be shaping up to be a strong season for the Citadins. what are your expectations for the team’s upcoming tournament at Université de Montréal?
Alexis Gohier-Drolet: We’re certainly hoping to build on this momentum. Our athletes are highly motivated and eager to showcase their skills on home turf. The competition will be fierce, but I’m confident in our team’s abilities.
