Benedikt: Thank you! It was a tough race, that’s without a doubt. Knowing that Johannes was right on my tail throughout that final lap added a layer of pressure, but I tried to stay focused on my shooting and trust the training I had put in. I’m incredibly grateful for Uros (Velepec) and the team’s support - they helped me bounce back after some early setbacks, giving me that extra push to keep fighting until the very end.
Absolutely, that mental toughness is truly commendable. You mentioned Johannes Thingnes Bö – another powerhouse on the biathlon circuit. Did you feel your battle with him pushed you harder in those final moments?
Benedikt: Oh,without a doubt. Johannes is a phenomenal athlete,and knowing he was so close definitely turned up the heat. He’s strong both on the skis and with his shooting, so I had to give everything I had to stay ahead. That competitive drive, the back-and-forth, is what makes these races so exhilarating.
You now claim the coveted red jersey, signifying your lead in the mass start standings. How does it feel to be at the top of the game this early in the season?
Benedikt: (Laughs) It’s a fantastic feeling, to be honest. This early season performance has given me a lot of confidence, but I know it’s a long season ahead. We need to stay focused, work hard, and take it one race at a time.
Speaking of the team, the German side are clearly on fire this season, with Philipp Nawrath securing another notable top-10 finish and Johannes Kühn earning his spot in the mass start. This must be a great surroundings to be a part of.
Benedikt: We’ve got a fantastic team dynamic. We push each other, support each other, and celebrate each other’s successes. Coach Velepec has instilled a real sense of belief and unity within the team. We’re all working towards the same goal,and the success we’re seeing is a direct reflection of that hard work and dedication.
