“The Game Has Changed”: A Conversation with Ebru Şahin about Sports,Modesty, and Tradition
Welcome back to the show, everyone! Today,we’re diving into a conversation that’s sure to spark debate: the intersection of sports, modesty, and evolving social norms. Joining me is Ebru Şahin, retired champion sprinter and coach, who has a wealth of experience both on the track and engaging with young athletes.
Ebru, thanks for joining us. Recent comments by Cübbeli Ahmet Hodja regarding women athletes and attire have ignited conversations across Turkey. As someone deeply involved in the world of athletics, what are your thoughts regarding his statements?
Ebru: Thank you for having me.Look, I respect everyone’s right to their beliefs, but I fundamentally disagree with hodja’s outlook. Sports are about pushing boundaries, celebrating human potential, and inspiring the next generation. By focusing on clothing, we risk overshadowing the dedication, skill, and sheer grit these athletes demonstrate.
You’re referencing Hodja’s stance on women’s attire in particular, arguing that certain sporting outfits contradict religious doctrine. How do you navigate the balance between personal faith and athletic expression?
Ebru: I believe faith and sports can absolutely coexist. Manny athletes find strength and purpose in their beliefs, and I’ve seen firsthand how it can motivate them to excel. But imposing one interpretation of religious doctrine on an entire sporting community is problematic. It limits individual choice and ignores the diverse tapestry of beliefs within our society.
There’s a clear tension here, isn’t there? Between upholding tradition and allowing space for individual expression and the evolving norms of society.
Ebru: Absolutely. It’s a conversation society needs to have, and it’s not just about sports. It’s about how we view women in public life, how we define modesty, and how we balance religious values with the rights of individuals.
Do you think these discussions are ultimately helpful in furthering understanding, or do they risk deepening divides within Turkish society?
Ebru: I think open dialog is always better than silence. We need to be able to talk about these issues respectfully, even when we disagree. Demonizing individuals or shutting down conversations doesn’t help anyone. It’s through respectful dialogue that we can hopefully find common ground and build a more inclusive society.
There are those who argue that Hodja’s comments, however controversial, reflect a wider sentiment within Turkish society. What’s your response to that?
Ebru: It’s vital to remember that not everyone shares those views. There’s a growing community in Turkey, especially amongst younger generations, that embraces a more progressive and inclusive vision of society. We see it in the athletes who defy convention, the artists who challenge norms, and the individuals who are bravely speaking out for their rights.
So your message to young athletes, especially young women, who might be feeling discouraged by these comments?
Ebru: keep pushing boundaries, keep chasing your dreams, and never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot wear or be. Your talent, your dedication, your spirit – that’s what truly matters. Don’t let limiting beliefs hold you back. Make your voice heard on and off the field.
Powerful words, Ebru. Thank you for sharing your experiences and perspectives with us today. This is undoubtedly a conversation that will continue to unfold. we’d love to hear your thoughts.
