Alba Berlin Finds Relief in Göttingen Victory, Eyes Turnaround
Berlin (dpa / bb) – December 23, 2024, 10:13 a.m. – A palpable sense of relief washed over the Alba Berlin basketball team following their decisive 109:83 victory against last-place BG Göttingen. The win, their first on the road in the Bundesliga (BBL), comes as a welcome reprieve for the struggling squad, who had been languishing in 15th place after a disappointing start to the season.
“This win was crucial for us,” stated Alba Berlin’s sports director, Himar Ojeda. “it was essential to prevent the mounting pressure from transforming into fear.” The victory, while only lifting them to 14th place, has injected a much-needed dose of optimism into the team. Ojeda believes the return of a nearly fully healthy roster will be the catalyst for a turnaround.
“The win is notable, but even more so as we finally have our complete squad available again,” Ojeda emphasized. “We’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment after months of dealing wiht injuries.”
The timing couldn’t be better. After a grueling week featuring two Euroleague games, Alba Berlin displayed renewed vigor against Göttingen, establishing a commanding lead early on. This early dominance ensured they wouldn’t be hampered by fatigue in the later stages of the game.
Adding to the challenges, Alba Berlin faced the unexpected departure of center Trevion Williams just an hour before tip-off. Williams, who has joined Euroleague competitor Maccabi Tel Aviv, leaves a void that the team must now fill.
“We’re actively searching for the best possible replacement, but finding a suitable player mid-season is no easy feat,” admitted Ojeda. This latest progress comes just weeks after Alba Berlin brought in center David McCormack to replace the dismissed Khalifa Koumadje.
Despite the roster upheaval, Alba Berlin is looking ahead to their next challenge: a Euroleague clash against Real Madrid on Boxing Day at 7 p.m., broadcast live on Magenta Sport.

Turnaround Time: Can Alba Berlin Find Thier footing?
Welcome back, hoops fans! Today, we’ve got a hot topic brewing in the Bundesliga, and I’m thrilled to be joined by former Alba Berlin assistant coach, the insightful and always-opinionated, Andreas “Andi” Schmidt. andi, thanks for taking the time to chat with us.
Andreas: A pleasure to be here! Always happy to discuss the team I care for.
Paul: So, Andi, we all saw the massive victory against Göttingen. A much-needed emotion booster for a team struggling to find its rhythm this season. Does this win signal a genuine turning point for Alba berlin, or is it just a temporary sigh of relief?
Andreas: It’s definitely a positive step, no doubt. The team was starved for a win, especially on the road. Seeing that full squad walkthrough without breaking a sweat, that gave me hope. But,letS not get ahead of ourselves. This is a marathon, not a sprint. One win doesn’t erase the issues they’ve been facing.
Paul: You hit the nail on the head there. Alba Berlin has been battling injuries for months, and now Trevion Williams’ sudden departure adds another layer of complexity to the roster. How do they even begin to address that loss?
Andreas: Williams leaving for Maccabi Tel Aviv is a blow, no question. He was a key piece in their rotation. Finding someone mid-season who can fill those shoes will be a challenge. But, Himar Ojeda is a crafty Director of Sport. He’s shown he can find diamonds in the rough, remember David McCormack?
I trust he’ll be working tirelessly to find a suitable replacement, but the team has to adapt, be flexible, and find ways to win with the current roster.
Paul: Speaking of adapting, Alba Berlin indeed has a packed schedule coming up. Their next game is Christmas Day against Real Madrid. A tough opponent at the best of times, let alone when you’re trying to regain your footing.
Andreas: Exactly! Talk about baptism by fire! Real Madrid is a force to be reckoned with, even for teams at full strength.Alba Berlin’s resilience will be tested. But hey, sometimes pressure can forge greatness. If they rise to the occasion and put up a fight, it could spark an even bigger turnaround.
Paul: It’ll be a test of their mettle for sure. This win against Göttingen, while important, can only be the first step. Now,I wanted to get your predictions. Where do you see Alba Berlin finishing this Bundesliga season?
Andreas: It’s a bit early to make definitive predictions, however, I believe they can crawl out of the bottom half. Each win builds confidence. With their full roster healthy and a bit of luck,I see them finishing somewhere between 8th and 10th place.
Paul: A respectable finish considering their rough start. Andi, thank you for your honest insights and expert analysis.
andreas: My pleasure! Always happy to share my thoughts and passion for the game.
