A devastating avalanche on Palandöken Mountain near Erzurum, Turkey, claimed the life of 16-year-old national judo athlete Emre Yazgan. The incident occurred during a training hike involving 15 young athletes from the Turkish judo junior national team and their coach.
The group, unaware of the impending danger, was traversing an area outside the designated and secured zones of the Palandöken ski resort. Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi stated that the athletes had chosen their route independently and had not informed local authorities, such as AFAD (disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) or the city management, of their plans.
Governor Çiftçi emphasized that consulting with relevant authorities beforehand could have potentially mitigated the risk. He highlighted that controlled avalanche blasting is routinely conducted in high-risk areas to prevent such tragedies.
The avalanche struck with sudden force, burying the athletes under a thick layer of snow. Five individuals sustained injuries, with Emre Yazgan suffering critical wounds. Despite intensive medical intervention, he tragically succumbed to his injuries. His twin brother, Yunus Yazgan, fortunately escaped with minor injuries.
survivors recounted harrowing experiences. Injured athlete Ali Bozkurt, speaking from the hospital, described the avalanche as a sudden and overwhelming event. He explained that the group had encountered hard-packed snow and decided to turn back when the slope gave way, engulfing them in a torrent of snow. He was carried hundreds of meters before managing to keep his head above the snow.
Another injured athlete, Hilmi Mucik, corroborated the speed and intensity of the avalanche. He stated that they waited for approximately 10 minutes under the snow before rescuers arrived. Some athletes were partially buried, while others required complete extraction.
Rescue efforts were elaborate by the remote location of the accident, away from the prepared ski areas. AFAD and the Jandarma, Turkey’s gendarmerie force, were mobilized, utilizing heavy machinery to free those trapped beneath the snow. emre Yazgan, buried fully, was located after an extensive search.
Berkay Aydın, one of the athletes, described the experience as terrifying. While the group had previously climbed the mountain, they had never encountered such a catastrophic event. Their intention was simply to continue their training when the avalanche swept them away.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of mountain environments and the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including consulting with local authorities and staying within designated areas.
