The Prensa Latina Sports Poll, recognizing the top athletes of 2024 in Latin America and the Caribbean, is nearing its conclusion. Early results indicate a commanding lead for Cuban athletes Mijaín López and Omara Durand.López, a five-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, has secured an impressive 75 votes, representing nearly 90% of the total votes cast in the Best Male Athlete category. His dominance in the sport is undeniable, solidifying his position as a frontrunner for the prestigious award.
In the women’s category, Durand holds a notable advantage with 33 nominations, more than double the votes received by Dominican runner Marileidy Paulino. Paulino, while garnering support from media outlets in Guatemala and Argentina, trails behind Durand’s overwhelming popularity.
The competition for the Best Team of 2024 is proving to be more tightly contested. The Argentinean soccer team, fresh off their Copa America victory, currently leads with 41 votes, holding an 11-vote advantage over the Cuban Baseball 5 team.

Yuriorkis gamboa: Omara is a phenomenal athlete, a sprinter with amazing speed and power. She works incredibly hard,and it shows in her results. It would be fantastic for Cuba to win both categories – it would be a testament to the talent and dedication of our athletes.

Yuriorkis Gamboa: Football in Argentina is a religion. Their copa América victory definitely propelled them into the spotlight, and they deserve their lead. however, Baseball 5 is gaining traction quickly, and the Cuban team is incredibly skilled and passionate. This could be a real nail-biter until the very end.

Yuriorkis Gamboa: I think it shows the immense talent and passion we have for sports in our region. We have athletes excelling at the highest levels in various disciplines,and it’s only going to get better. We are a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
