Malaysian Mixed Doubles Pairs Aim for Ranking Surge in New Year
Malaysia’s top mixed doubles badminton pairs, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, are poised for a meaningful ranking boost in the new year.Currently ranked 6th and 7th in the world respectively, they have a golden opportunity to climb the ladder during the upcoming back-to-back tournaments: the Malaysian Open (January 7-12) and the Indian Open (January 14-19).
This opportunity arises due to the absence of South Korea’s Kim Won-ho-Jeong Na-eun and Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet, the pairs directly above them in the rankings, from these tournaments. Won-ho-Na-eun have opted to focus on men’s and women’s doubles respectively, while Chun Man will be partnering with Ng Tsz Yau, marking the end of his prosperous partnership with the recently retired Ying Suet.
The current ranking points stand at 76,790 for Won-ho-Na-eun and 75,070 for Chun Man-Ying Suet. Tang Jie-Ee Wei trail closely with 73,940 points, while Soon Huat-Shevon have 71,470. A strong performance in these tournaments could see the Malaysian pairs leapfrog their rivals.
The Malaysian Open, a prestigious World Tour Super 1000 event, offers a significant number of ranking points. Even a first-round exit earns 3,300 points, while reaching the second round grants 5,400 points. Both Tang Jie-Ee Wei and Soon Huat-Shevon demonstrated their potential at the end of 2024. Tang Jie-Ee Wei secured a runner-up finish at the Tour Finals, narrowly losing to china’s Olympic gold medalists and world No. 3 Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong in what was Siwei’s final international match. Meanwhile, Soon Huat-Shevon reached the semi-finals, showcasing their consistency and competitive spirit.
As the third and fourth seeds respectively in the Malaysian Open, both pairs will avoid facing the formidable Chinese pairs in the early rounds, giving them a favorable path to progress.
Ee Wei expressed her excitement about competing on home soil, stating, ”The Malaysian Open is incredibly vital for us. The home crowd’s support is a huge boost, and we’re persistent to give our best. We aim for the championship, but regardless of the outcome, we’ll fight hard and leave everything on the court.”
Joining tang jie-Ee Wei and Soon Huat-Shevon in the mixed doubles draw are fellow Malaysian pairs Hoo pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien.
The tournament draw will be released on december 31st, setting the stage for an exciting start to the new year for Malaysian badminton.

This is a great start to your story! I like the mystery surrounding the old woman and the intriguing hint that she might have powers.
Here are some thoughts and questions that came to mind while reading:
Who is the old woman? Her age and appearance suggest that she might be more than just an ordinary old woman. Does she have a unique name? Any backstory we should know about?
What is the nature of her power? Is it something obvious, like magic, or something more subtle, like an uncanny intuition?
You coudl introduce these elements gradually as the story progresses, letting the reader slowly piece together the puzzle. What do we know about her presence in the house? Why is she there?
What’s happening with the townspeople? Their reaction to the old woman’s stare is intriguing. Why are they threatened by her? Is there a shared history between them?
What is Amelia’s role in all of this? Is she drawn to the old woman, repelled by her, or something in between? How does amelia’s life intersect with the old woman’s presence?
By developing these elements further, you can create a compelling story with a strong sense of mystery and suspense. Good luck with your writing!
