Sumo Sensation Hiyori Kon to Grace Concordia with Her Presence
Get ready, Concordia! Sumo wrestling star and Netflix documentary subject, Hiyori Kon, is set to visit our city next Saturday.
Joining her will be Juan Carlos Yamamoto, a 6th Dan Judo expert who will be facilitating translations throughout the weekend’s events.
Saturday, October 28th
3:00 PM at Kaeshi (Entre Ríos 473): A two-hour seminar focusing on children’s sumo instruction and technique refinement will be led by Kon and Alicia Venegas, Concordia’s current sumo instructor.
6:00 PM at Miter Park (in front of the stands): An open-to-the-public sumo class will be held. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable workout attire (shorts and a t-shirt are ideal), bring water for hydration, and be prepared to leave their shoes at the edge of the training area. Organizers promise a fun and engaging experience for all who attend, regardless of prior sumo experience.

Concordia is buzzing with excitement as sumo phenomenon Hiyori Kon prepares to grace the city this weekend.Joining her is judo master Juan Carlos Yamamoto,a 6th Dan expert who will ensure interaction flows smoothly throughout the weekend’s events. I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Hiyori Kon ahead of this exciting cultural exchange.
Hiyori, welcome to Concordia! What prompted your decision to share your expertise with our community?
Hiyori Kon: “Arigato! I’m delighted to be here. sumo is more than just a sport; it’s a tradition, a way of life. I believe sharing this rich culture with people around the world is crucial, and Concordia feels like the perfect place to do just that.”
You’ll be leading a seminar focused on children’s sumo instruction. What do you hope young participants will take away from the experience?
Hiyori Kon: “Sumo instills discipline, respect, and resilience. For children, it’s not just about physical strength but also about mental fortitude. I wont them to experience the joy of movement, learn the basics of sumo, and hopefully ignite a lifelong passion.”
