The Spanish First Division Club Cup witnessed a remarkable double victory for Bidasoa XXI, securing their return to the Honor Division for the upcoming year.
In the men’s competition, Bidasoa XXI dominated from the outset, claiming the top spot in the standings and maintaining their lead throughout the tournament. Their final tally of 1,148 points solidified their promotion. Close behind where the local favorites, CN Ferca-San José, who put up a strong fight with 1,132 points, while CN Barcelona rounded out the podium with a respectable 1,077 points.
Several standout performances contributed to Bidasoa XXI’s success. Paul Beaugrand emerged victorious in both the 800 and 1500 freestyle events. Asier Iguiñiz showcased his versatility with second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, 100 and 200 medley, while Jon Goñez secured second place in the 200 breaststroke.Iker Soto claimed third place in the 100 butterfly, Pierre L’Argeron achieved third place in the 200 and 800 freestyle, and Asier Iguiñiz added another third-place finish in the 400 medley. The women’s team faced a more challenging path.A disqualification in a relay event cost them a significant 70 points,putting them in a arduous position despite their early dominance. However,the Bidasoa XXI women displayed remarkable resilience,pushing hard on the final day to secure second place and earn their promotion alongside CN Ferca-San José,who clinched the victory with 1,198 points.CN Terrassa finished third with 1,129 points, narrowly missing out on promotion.
Petra Bisa shone brightly, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and setting new Euskadi records in the 50 and 200 freestyle. Amaia Cendoya triumphed in the 50 butterfly, while ainhoa Martín secured victory in the 400 medley.Ainhoa Martín further cemented her dominance by breaking the Euskadi record in the 200 breaststroke.

AI: Thank you. It’s been an emotional journey, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved as a team. Pushing through tough competition and finally earning that spot back in the Honor Division is a feeling I can’t describe.
The men’s team seemed to dominate from the start. Was there ever a moment where you felt pressure or doubt?
AI: It’s always competitive at this level. We knew CN Ferca-San José and CN Barcelona would be strong contenders. The early lead helped, but we couldn’t afford to get complacent. Every race was crucial, and we had to stay focused until the very end.
You had some remarkable individual moments, notably shattering those Euskadi records. What does it feel like to make history for your region?
AI: It’s pretty surreal. It’s an honor to represent Euskadi,and I feel incredibly grateful for the support we receive.
Breaking those records was never my main goal. It was focusing on my personal best in every race and contributing as much as I could to the team’s success.
The records are a bonus, and hopefully, they inspire othre young swimmers in our region to push their limits.
speaking of young swimmers, Oierz Eizaguirre showed immense potential by breaking the Basque record for the 50 breaststroke. what advice would you give to young athletes like him hoping to follow in your footsteps?
AI: Hard work,dedication,and resilience are key. It’s a demanding sport, but the rewards are worth it.
Find a supportive team and coaches who believe in you, and never be afraid to push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
Most importantly, enjoy the journey and celebrate every milestone along the way. Swim with your heart.
