Winging It: An Interview with Badminton Champion Astrid Zhang on the Power of Community
Welcome back sports fans! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the world of badminton with a special guest, Astrid Zhang, a retired professional badminton player and Olympic medalist. Astrid, welcome to the show!
Astrid: Thanks for having me! It’s great to be here.
Let’s talk about this fantastic initiative,SG 65 Badminton. The emphasis on casual play and building connections really caught my eye. In your professional career, was the social aspect of badminton something you valued?
Astrid: Absolutely. While the competitive side was intense, the friendships and camaraderie I built on and off the court were invaluable. Badminton is a sport that fosters a strong sense of community, and that’s something I think SG 65 is capturing perfectly.
The article mentions that SG 65 welcomes all skill levels. Do you think this approach is essential for growing the sport and encouraging new players?
Astrid: I firmly believe so.
Intimidation can be a barrier for beginners, especially in a sport like badminton that demands agility and precision. Creating a welcoming surroundings where everyone feels cozy, regardless of thier skill,is key to fostering a love for the game.
It’s not all about smashing shuttles, though. The article highlights the importance of social gatherings. How did social events contribute to your team dynamic during your professional years?
Astrid: We were a tight-knit group, and those social outings helped us bond outside of training and competitions. They allowed us to relax, de-stress, and get to know each othre on a personal level. This camaraderie translated onto the court, where we supported each other unconditionally.
What advice woudl you give to someone hesitant to join a badminton group like SG 65?
Astrid: Just go for it! What’s the worst that could happen? You might learn a new skill, meet some amazing people, and find a new passion. There are so many benefits to being part of a community like this.Don’t let fear or self-doubt hold you back.
I couldn’t agree more! It’s fantastic to see initiatives like SG 65 making badminton accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Astrid, thanks for sharing your insights with us today.
Astrid: My pleasure.
