Richomme Extends Lead as Vendée Globe Fleet Approaches Cape Horn
Yoann Richomme, skipper of Paprec Arkea, has significantly widened his lead in the Vendée Globe, leaving his closest competitor, Charlin Dalin, nearly 100 nautical miles behind as the race approaches the iconic Cape Horn. This strategic advantage was gained on Christmas Eve,as the two frontrunners navigated the South Atlantic.
While they had been neck-and-neck for several days, Richomme’s decision to take a wider tack proved advantageous. As of Wednesday morning, he was averaging an impressive 25 knots, while dalin, aboard Macif Santé Prévoyance, trailed behind at under 20 knots.
Dalin’s position near the Falklands has placed him within an anticyclonic zone, a meteorological phenomenon that can both hinder and propel progress. This creates an element of suspense, as he coudl potentially emerge from this zone ahead of Richomme.
Simultaneously occurring, Sébastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil) is steadily closing in on Cape Horn, albeit isolated from the leading duo by over 700 nautical miles. he holds a pleasant lead over Thomas Ruyant (4th), who is still traversing the Pacific Ocean, midway between Point Nemo and the Horn Passage.”The top three have enjoyed exceptional conditions in the latter part of the Pacific,” Ruyant remarked. “We’re still catching up.” Despite the distance, Ruyant remains optimistic, stating, “I’m pleased to be part of a competitive group. It’s a tough race, and I’ll do my best to maintain my position.”
The intensity of the competition is evident in the tight pack of eight skippers within 300 nautical miles of each other, extending down to Justine Mettraux in 11th place.
