Leading the charge is LeBron James, a veteran who has been synonymous with Christmas Day basketball since his debut in 2003. Remarkably, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar has been a fixture in the league longer then San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama has been alive. This Wednesday, thes two generational talents will be at the heart of the NBA’s festive spectacle.

The Celtics-76ers matchup holds a special place in NBA Christmas history. With 14 previous encounters on December 25th, it’s the most frequent holiday rivalry in the league. Celtics guard Jrue Holiday, a veteran of many Christmas Day games, acknowledges the sacrifice of spending the holiday away from family but emphasizes the unique privilege of playing on this grand stage.
“It’s an honor to be able to play on Christmas,” Holiday shared. “I remember being a kid, eagerly awaiting the start of the Christmas games. It’s always a special feeling.”
For decades, Christmas Day games have served as a gateway for casual fans to engage with the NBA. As the NFL enters its final regular season stretch, the NBA’s five nationally televised games on ABC and ESPN will command the attention of a wide audience.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recognizes the meaning of Christmas Day basketball, noting a shift in perception from initial resistance to the current demand for more teams to be included in the holiday lineup.
“I wish more of our great players had the opportunity to play on that stage on Christmas Day,” Silver remarked. “It’s been an interesting change from my early days in the league, when we were getting a lot of complaints about playing on Christmas, to now, where we’re getting questions like, ‘Why don’t we play on Christmas?’ I wish we coudl accommodate more teams.”
