Tony Estanguet, a three-time Olympic canoe champion, envisioned a future dedicated too his sport after retirement. He surpassed even his own aspirations, becoming a national hero during the unforgettable summer of the Paris 2024 Games. His impact was so profound that former Prime Minister Michel Barnier considered appointing him Minister of Sports. This close connection to the political sphere is further evidenced by the fact that Marie Barsacq, a close friend of Estanguet during the Paris 2024 Games, joined François Bayrou’s government on December 23rd.
Capitalizing on this momentum, president Emmanuel Macron extended an invitation to Estanguet, proposing he lead the organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Games. However, Estanguet politely declined this possibility. Despite turning down this high-profile role, Estanguet’s future remains bright. The influential International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to offer him a prominent position within its ranks, marking a significant step in his post-athletic career. While a promising future awaits, Estanguet’s immediate desire is a well-deserved rest.
