From accordion to Asphalt: A Chat with Cycling Star Mikel landa
Welcome back, cycling fans,to another exciting edition of “Inside the Peloton”! Today,we have a very special guest, the one and only Mikel Landa, fresh off his stellar jersey reveal for Soudal Speedy-Step. Mikel, thanks for joining us!
Mikel: It’s a pleasure to be here. I’m always happy to chat about cycling and, well, maybe a little bit of music too!
Moderator: Let’s talk about that jersey reveal. While Julian Alaphilippe set the bar high last year with his Céline Dion serenade, your accordion rendition of “It’s all Coming Back to Me Now” was both unexpected and brilliant. What sparked this musical approach?
Mikel: [laughs] Well, Julian certainly left some big shoes to fill! We wanted to keep things fun and engaging for the fans, and I’ve always considered myself a bit of a joker. Plus, during lockdown, I dusted off my accordion and started sharing some musical moments online. It seemed like a natural fit to incorporate that into the reveal.
Moderator: It definitely paid off! The video has been making waves online, and people seem to be loving your musical talents. do you think there’s a connection between your musical side and your cycling success?
Mikel: Perhaps! Music and cycling both require discipline, rhythm, and a certain level of passion. They challenge you to push boundaries and strive for excellence, whether it’s hitting a high note or conquering a challenging climb.
Moderator: I can see the parallels. You mentioned music helped you connect with fans during lockdown. What do you think is the role of social media and creative content in today’s cycling world?
Mikel: I think it’s crucial. It allows us to connect with fans on a more personal level, share a glimpse into our lives beyond the races, and build a stronger sense of community.
Moderator: absolutely. And Soudal Quick-Step has always been at the forefront of using creative marketing strategies.
now, let’s shift gears a little. Alaphilippe’s exit and Evenepoel’s recovery pave the way for you to take on a larger leadership role within the team. How do you see your role evolving in the coming season?
Mikel: It’s a big responsibility, but I’m excited for the challenge. We have a strong team, and I’m confident we can achieve great things together. My focus will be on contributing to the team’s success and, of course, trying to get my hands on a few more victories myself.
Moderator:
High hopes for the season!
