Diving Deep: A conversation about Algeria’s Growing Apnea Scene
Welcome back, sports enthusiasts! today we’re diving deep – literally – into a truly fascinating sport gaining traction in Algeria: apnea. We’re joined by national apnea coach, Badis Guezati, to discuss the recent Algerian indoor Apnea Sports Championship held in Oran. Coach Guezati, welcome to the show.
Badis Guezati: Thank you for having me. It’s exciting to see the spotlight on apnea, a sport that demands remarkable physical and mental fortitude.
Moderator: Absolutely. The championship drew over 70 athletes from across the country, competing in five demanding disciplines. What do you attribute to this surge in popularity for apnea in Algeria?
Badis Guezati: I believe it’s a confluence of factors. Firstly, there’s a growing awareness of apnea as a sport that tests the limits of human endurance and focus. Secondly, its connection to the sea, a cornerstone of Algerian culture, resonates deeply with our people.
Moderator: It’s captivating you mention the cultural connection. Many see apnea as primarily a Mediterranean sport. Do you think this perception limits its growth in other regions?
Badis Guezati: While apnea certainly has deep roots in Mediterranean cultures,I firmly believe its appeal is worldwide. The thrill of pushing your physical boundaries, the serenity of underwater exploration, these are experiences that transcend geographical limitations.
Moderator: Now, the championship featured an impressive array of disciplines. We saw static apnea, bi-fin dynamic apnea, even speed endurance. Which discipline do you find most captivating, and why?
Badis Guezati: Each discipline demands a unique set of skills, making them all compelling in their own right. Personally,I’m drawn to static apnea; the pure mental challenge of holding your breath for extended periods is truly remarkable.
Moderator: That brings up an important point; the mental aspect of apnea is often overlooked. What kind of mental training do athletes undergo?
Badis Guezati:
Mental preparation is as crucial as physical training.Athletes learn visualization techniques, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices to manage stress and build mental resilience underwater.
Moderator: Now, Coach, many people might be hesitant to try apnea, thinking it’s too hazardous. How woudl you address their concerns?
Badis Guezati: Safety is paramount in apnea. We emphasize proper training and buddy systems. Athletes learn to recognize their limits and never push beyond them. Like any sport, apnea carries inherent risks, but with proper training and respect for the sport, those risks can be minimized.
Moderator: That’s reassuring to hear. what message would you like to send to aspiring apnea athletes in Algeria and beyond?
Badis Guezati:
I encourage anyone intrigued by apnea to explore it further. It is a sport that pushes your boundaries, fosters mental discipline, and connects you with the underwater world in a profound way. The Algerian apnea scene is vibrant and welcoming. Come join us,and discover the magic of apnea.
